FOREST HOUSE

We were commissioned to design a home that reflects the client’s desire for privacy and respect for the natural beauty of their undeveloped lot. The 5-acre site slopes gently down from the road, leading to a forest of mature red oak, sweet gum and tulip poplars along a perennial stream.

The house was imagined as a long, thin campus of buildings following the topography and tucked within the dense existing tree cover. The buildings’ dark vertical siding disappears behind rows of trunks, and the flat roofs allow for views of the impressive canopy beyond. Within the house, a long, open corridor organizes all of the rooms, and allows for natural light to be borrowed from one space, and from one level, to another. The honed stone floors, oiled cypress walls, and a neutral color palette provide soft, calming textures, intended to compliment the expansive views into the forest beyond.
